Bottom Fishing

Bottom Fishing

One of the easiest ways to find fish is to look for offshore structures, like small rock piles and natural bottom cavities. There are hundreds of 20’ to 50’ structures anywhere from 1/2 to 10 miles out. We use electronics and custom charts to position the boat up-current to set up a drift over these areas. The jig head weights we use are varied, depending on water depth and current speeds. Just drop the bait all the way to the bottom, making sure you can maintain good bottom contact and start bouncing it around the structure as you drift. I like to let the jig free-fall to the bottom as I think the commotion of it banging on the structure or kicking up sand helps to draw attention. Then, set the hook!
